Hypnotherapy for Fears and Phobias

Just like as our body shape changes we need better fitting clothes, as our experiences change we need a better fitting internal monologue.

One of the tools in my kit bag for fears and phobias is Hypnotherapy. Hypnotherapy has been misrepresented in the media for entertainment for so long that I feel that the therapeutic power has been diluted somewhat. As a Member of The National Hypnotherapy Society and with years of training, I wanted to share more information to help demystify it a little. No hocus pocus or chicken dances - but I can offer a cute dog picture! 🧙‍♀️🐓🐶

A Hypnotherapist studies and understands great detail about how the human mind works, including how and why we accept or reject any information we receive throughout our lives in support of our survival.

Sometimes, like a filing system, we have received some information and put it into a folder in our brain that helped to protect us or help us in some way. For example, as a small child, we might have understandably felt scared for our life when a big dog bolted towards us and knocked us over because it was twice our size with sharp teeth. Our mind has learnt through that experience (and through witnessing the behaviour of our caregivers) that for our protection "we are small and defenceless", and "dogs hurt us" and therefore the next time we see a dog the protective message is "dogs are to be avoided at all costs". We have told ourselves that we have done a great job at fixing that issue and put the paper in the "how to deal with dogs" file, we have forgotten about the original event and got on with filing more papers. This is, however, a belief we now hold, all our thoughts feelings and behaviours align to this belief, this belief protects the small child, but as we become adults the belief no longer serves us. We have all the physical reactions of being scared because we are. Our mind is still protecting little us, we are subconsciously telling ourselves that we are safer if we avoid dogs, holding on to beliefs despite logically knowing that not "all" dogs are scary, with the best will in the world, somehow we can't seem to change it.

Sometimes the reason for the fear or phobia is a little less obvious but there is always a protective reason. This is where hypnotherapy comes in. Hypnotherapy helps us sense check our thoughts, find and reject the old that are holding us back and accept positive new better fitting beliefs.
